If you’re not following Jennifer Garner on Instagram…I’m sorry you don’t love yourself, I guess? No, but really, the actress has one of the best Insta accounts in the game and she frequently takes to IGTV to show off her baking and cooking skills in her recurring series #PretendCookingShow.
This past weekend, in a story first reported by Us Weekly, Jen shared that her son Samuel (who also notably gave her spice jars some hilarious new labels) had lectured her for eating too much candy, so she decided to make soft pretzels instead.
“He said to me yesterday, ‘Mom you have had too much candy. It’s time to stop,’” she said. “Well, that’s too big, when a kid can tell you you’ve had too much candy, but he didn’t say anything about soft pretzels!”
Jen then delightfully made Alton Brown’s recipe for soft pretzels, though she did make a few alterations to his process. Sorry, Alton! She also offered up some really great tips for baking like explaining how to activate yeast, and sharing the tip that she typically uses her paddle attachment, then her hook attachment when making bread. Literally taking notes.
But then the star gave perhaps the best baking advice of all: If it’s homemade with love, it doesn’t have to be pretty. In fact, that’s usually how you know it’s homemade!
“If anyone tries to suggest that you aren’t beautiful, they might be right,” she said, staring at the pretzels. “That’s how my kids know I made it. If it looks just a little sketchy, they know it’s mom.”
Once she was done with her pretzels, she took a bite and had rave reviews for herself.
“Lord have mercy this is good!” she said. Like I said, the woman is a delight! But I will never forgive her for making me want a soft pretzel this badly…
