Some Restaurants Are Offering Alcohol Delivery

The news around the COVID-19 outbreak is constantly changing, but information about food safety and how to keep yourself healthy is crucial right now. Here is a comprehensive list on the foods you should be stocking up on during this period of social distancing, as well as information about your local grocery stores’ changing hours, an explanation of “no-contact delivery,” and a guide on how to help your community and its businesses throughout closures.

Most restaurants are only servicing takeout or delivery orders due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It was also announced that at this time some of these restaurants will be allowed to sell alcohol as part of these orders, but the rules around that aren’t so simple.

To help aid businesses while still keeping employees and customers safe, The State Liquor Authority of New York announced ways that businesses could still sell alcohol to their patrons. First, in order to sell alcoholic products for off-site consumption, the restaurant it’s coming from has to have the proper liquor license and can only sell the type of beverages that the license covers.

Additionally, the alcohol, even though it is not being consumed at the restaurant, needs to be transported in a closed container that complies with the open container laws of New York state. Those who are delivering the alcohol order to a customer, whether through a third party service or a delivery person from the restaurant itself, need to have a copy of the business’s liquor license for verification purposes as well.

The main catch, though, is that to get alcohol delivered to your house it needs to be accompanied by the purchase of food as well—so your wine has to come with some form of sustenance. But don’t think of this as a damper, because the bigger your order, the more you’re helping out your local bars and restaurants during this tough time for business.

Check in with the places you’d often visit during the week to see if they have this service available—it can help you stay fed during self isolation and can be great for their business in the meantime. Whether you’re a customer or a business, you can read all of the guidelines surrounding alcohol delivery here.
